Ideas: Make Family Feel Special on Your Wedding Day
Your wedding is a big opportunity to spread love and connection even beyond those vows you will be taking with your new life partner. While it is appropriate that your day be focused on you and your partner, don't miss out on this once in a lifetime opportunity to make immediate and even extended family members feel valued and let them know how much their presence means to you on your wedding day.
These ideas are just a starting point. Use your own creativity, personality and flare to communicate your love and appreciation. One thing to keep in mind is that your wedding day, and the weeks leading up to it, are likely to be very hectic and demanding, make time to pre-arrange these little touches far in advance to prevent them from being just another burden, or worse, failing to have the desired impact. Your genuine words of appreciation will mean a great deal to those who support and love you and will be remembered forever.
1. Write a special note of thanks to each parent (including step-parents where appropriate) letting them know a few specific things they have done or said that has had a positive influence in your life. Be detailed and let them know that their seed of giving is blooming in your life and heart. Leave the note on the seat they will occupy during the ceremony. It will be a nice surprise for them. Label the note well and make sure the ushers know those envelopes belong there.
2. Write a note to your future in-laws, expressing your gratitude for your soon to be spouse, specifically listing character traits that you value in him/her. Let them know you value family and your partner's connection with his/her family. Leave this note on their seats for a surprise reveal during the ceremony. Again, make sure they are well-marked and that the ushers know they should be there and looked after until discovered.
3. Pre-film a video with you and your future spouse "interviewing" each other about your respective family members, making sure to recall humorous stories and expressing your gratitude for their investment in your lives. It doesn't have to be fancy, just sincere. Upload to You Tube or Vimeo and send a text link to your family members to view the video on their own the night of your rehearsal dinner after everyone departs and before the ceremony day. Thank them for sharing in your joy.
However you decide to communicate your sincere appreciation to your beloved family members, know that this one act will bring you an even greater measure of joy and connectivity on your wedding day. Seize the moment and don't let this opportunity pass you by!
